put a bowl on his head and cut around.....that always worked for my mom when she cut our hair

Do an internet search. There are sites with step-by-step directions. My only advice is to take it slow. You can always cut more later, but if you cut too much, you're stuck. Worst case scenario, get some clippers and give him an all-over buzzcut.

(Of course, I have a theory that little boys have short hair because it makes it easier to take the stitches out. At some point, all little boys manage a head wound or two.)

Get one of those clipper sets with the attachments (combs or whatever they're called). They're numbered and correspond to the length of hair cut or left on head! It's probably a bit more consistent that shears. Have fun and don't cut his ear off!
